Maritime Industry
Reliability Through Real-Time, Condition Based Monitoring
Maritime applications represent one of the greatest examples of truly mission-critical uptimes, particularly for the large diesel engines that power ocean-going cargo ships. When an unexpected breakdown occurs, the cargo ship is typically located in remote and difficult-to-reach areas, requiring a rescue-based repair for major breakdowns. Poseidon Systems’ Industrial IoT solution can avoid unexpected downtimes by monitoring oil & other lubricating fluids for wear debris, online oil condition monitoring, vibration, and other sensors that foretell mechanical failures. Our sensors can detect excessive levels of moisture, combustion by-products, and other contaminants, enabling predictive maintenance activities based on the health of the engine, gearboxes, and hydraulic equipment. Additionally, our engine-mounted sensors provide maintenance technicians with the information that enable our customers to keep their maritime equipment in operation for longer without breakdowns, and also gives them the advance knowledge of when maintenance—whether minor or major—is coming due sooner than expected, before a catastrophic failure occurs. This data and information helps customers maximize uptime, and especially maximize revenues.
Gearbox Fault Detection & Life Extension With Wear Debris Monitoring
Poseidon’s advanced online wear debris sensors are capable of detecting debris in engine, gearbox, and hydraulic oil sooner and with more specificity than offline analysis. Poseidon’s line of Trident DM sensors are capable of detecting and classifying particles as ferrous or nonferrous and sizing these particles in order to provide immediate and direct insight about the health of your ship’s engine so that you can act accordingly and will not be surprised with issues once it is too late.
Reduce Offline Oil Analysis With Online Oil Condition Monitoring
Poseidon’s line of online oil condition sensors eliminates the need for periodic fluid sampling and decrease O&M costs. The limitations of offline oil analysis means many issues are not found which can lead to secondary damage or catastrophic failure, which can lead to major issues for oceanic ships. Online oil condition monitoring enables customers to know more about the health of their ship and confidently travel without fear of issues in the middle of a voyage.
Greased Lubricated Equipment Wear Debris Monitoring
Poseidon’s handheld ferrous metal debris monitor allows for customers to gather insights about their greased equipment in seconds in order know the condition of the equipment immediately. Midas™ is a compact and free standing monitor that uses oil samples to detect high levels of ferrous debris on your ship’s greased components to prevent further damage, increase reliability during voyages, and optimize the ship’s maintenance schedule.
How Does It Work?

Poseidon oil condition monitoring sensors can easily be installed into your locomotive and will start collecting and reporting real-time data on a number of properties about the health of the oil in your ship’s engine and other lubricating equipment. Poseidon Systems utilizes a suite of sensors; including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), a sensing method based on analyzing a fluid’s electrical properties across a range of frequencies, to collect more information than single-frequency dielectric or conductance sensors.
Poseidon Live immediately notifies you when it detects something to be concerned with, so you can investigate and resolve the root cause as soon as possible to prevent costly secondary damage or catastrophic failure. Furthermore, this data can be used to reduce O&M costs by optimizing your maintenance and repair schedule.
Why Poseidon Systems?
Poseidon Systems is here to support you and your individual reliability goals, from start to finish. We can provide sensors for what you need and provide solutions to your specific challenges. Poseidon can provide individual sensors for oil condition monitoring or we can provide you with a complete system of sensors and solution including wear debris, viscosity, direct relative humidity measurements, etc.; including a full IIoT solution.
Regardless of which Poseidon sensors are right for your business, Poseidon Systems has an advanced Industrial IoT platform to help you understand the data and apply it to your reliability goals. Poseidon Live cloud-based monitoring software allows customers to perform analyses utilizing multiple data sets, including online oil condition sensor data and SCADA system data in order to get a holistic view and understanding of the health the of oil in your ship’s engine.
Poseidon’s ability to collect real-time data from a network of different sensors and immediately connect it to a robust IIoT platform creates a differentiated solution system and the best value to our customers.

Poseidon Live Interface
What We Do & Our Approach
Poseidon Systems designs and manufactures sensors to help optimize operations and reduce O&M costs for our customers. Our online wear debris sensors are able to provide the earliest failure detection of any condition-based monitoring solution and adds value to our customer’s operations in a numerous ways. Early detection reduces O&M costs through an optimized maintenance schedule and reduction of unplanned maintenance in remote locations and unexpected downtime.
Poseidon is able to deliver real, applicable results to our customers. Key benefits of Poseidon’s online wear debris sensors include the ability to detect, size, and classify metallic particles as ferrous or nonferrous, the ability to provide real-time, online engine health information, which maximizes reliability and reduced unplanned downtime. The online, real-time information provided is able to
detect failures and issues early on and detect those missed by periodic offline analysis. Customers are able to use data from Poseidon’s oil condition monitoring sensors in combination with offline tools to identify failure modes of diesel engines in order to prevent the unplanned breakdowns and downtime in the middle of a mission. Customers can continuously monitor the health of their oil and make the best decisions that will ensure maximum uptime and minimal breakdowns.
