Drivetrain and engine test cells are the backbone of engineering testing programs. Validation and verification testing programs have been utilized for centuries in one form or another. Sadly, the methodology for monitoring fluid and component health during this testing has not progressed past physical samples sent to a lab. These typically can take days to weeks for results, meaning the vital information necessary for making decisions during these test are not available in time. In the past few years, some of the largest drivetrain and engine test cell managers have turned to Poseidon Systems to provide real time fluid and wear debris monitoring directly to their test cell operating systems. Poseidon Systems offers an all-in-one system (Trident FQMS) that provides real time monitoring of the fluid quality, water-in-oil, wear debris down to 40um, temperature, and viscosity.  Within the Trident FQMS is Poseidon’s oil quality sensor (Trident QW3100) and wear debris sensor (Trident DM4500) packaged within a NEMA 4 enclosure for easy installation, connected to an external edge device (Trident AP2200). This allows for easy integration directly into the data collection system or direct connection to Poseidon’s monitoring software (Poseidon Live). With the FQMS, you will now be able to monitor and alarm on oil degradation, contamination, additive depletion, failing components generating wear debris, etc. when the events occur. This allow for corrective action during test to ensure both the quality of the test and potential learnings. For example, many of our customers have found certain operating conditions cause a dramatic reduction in engine oil life, causing end customers to who operate in such a way to change oil twice as frequent as necessary: In other cases, soot levels and Total Base Number (TBN) were correlated to certain operating profiles and different components. This was able to detect real time the impact of oil type, seal design, and operating profile: Poseidon System’s has been providing these insights for over 3 years at the largest drivetrain and engine OEMs in the world; each one realizing significant ROI during the testing phase.
